Historically, Sheffield Hallam has predominantly been a Conservative stronghold until the Labour Party's victory in 2017. It is South Yorkshire's wealthiest constituency, with a significant portion of high earners and professionals. Over 60% of its residents hold a degree, making it one of the highest in the UK.

The area, which includes parts of Sheffield and is largely rural with low unemployment, had always returned Conservative MPs until the Liberal Democrats' breakthrough in 1997. Jared O'Mara captured the seat for Labour in 2017, marking its first Labour MP, but faced controversies leading to his resignation. The 2019 election saw Labour retain the seat with Olivia Blake's win, highlighting the constituency's evolving political landscape amidst its rich heritage, including ties to the Robin Hood legend in Loxley.
