Constituency Information
East Ham, part of the London Borough of Newham, has been represented by Stephen Timms of the Labour Party since 1997. Following the 2023 Periodic Review, the constituency will undergo boundary changes, transferring Beckton and Royal Docks wards to the West Ham and Beckton constituency for the upcoming general election.

Originally formed from parts of Newham North East and Newham South in 1997, East Ham has been a Labour stronghold for decades. Predecessor Ron Leighton served from 1979 until 1994. Stephen Timms has led the seat since its inception, achieving the highest vote count (35,471) and majority (27,826) in 2010, indicating one of the most secure Labour seats nationwide. Labour has consistently won with absolute majorities across five elections and controls all ward council seats.

East Ham, north of the Thames, includes significant landmarks like King George V and Royal Albert Docks, and London City Airport. Benefiting from Thames Gateway regeneration, the area is expected to gain 21,000 jobs from the Silvertown Quays redevelopment. The constituency has a diverse population, with three-quarters being non-white, over a third Muslim, and more than half Asian, according to the 2011 Census. Unemployment stands at 9.9%, significantly above the national average.
