Initially formed to replace Carshalton seat, it saw Liberal Democrat dominance from 1997 to 2010 with marginal victories. Post-2015, its results became highly competitive. The 2010-2015 Liberal Democrats' coalition, marked by unmet promises and austerity measures, led to significant national losses for the party, though Carshalton and Wallington remained an exception until 2015. By 2019, amidst a backdrop of Brexit and local Leave vote, it was one of the few Liberal Democrat seats gained by Conservatives. The constituency, part of London's stockbroker belt, is characterized by private housing and scenic parks.
