Who Could Be The Next Wigan Athletic Manager

The following football managers could all be in the hat for the next job at Wigan, depending on their respective situations as and when the position comes up. They have previously appeared in the betting for the Latics managers job in the past, or have a profile that may suit the club.

Duncan Ferguson

Former Everton player and coach Duncan Ferguson started his managerial career at Forest Green Rovers. His appointment went differently than planned, with only one win from 18 games, and he was sacked at the end of the 2022/23 season. We suspected he would be on the radar of other clubs, and he was duly appointed at Inverness Caledonian Thistle in September 2023.

Antony Barry

Featured in the betting ahead of Kolo Toure being appointed, Antony Barry may be the go-to man if Wigan wanted to give a younger, untested manager a chance. His CV already features assistant manager roles at some illustrious football names (Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Belgium, Portugal, Republic of Ireland.) As of the 2023/24 season, Barry is currently working with Thomas Tuchel at Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich

Rob Kelly

Rob Kelly has predominantly been a caretaker manager since he lost the permanent Leicester City managers job in 2007. Preston, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest, Barrow and Wigan have all appointed Kelly as a caretaker manager. In the summer of 2023, he joined Preston North End as a first-team coach, where he again teamed up with Ryan Lowe, who Kelly worked with at Bury.

Karl Robinson

The former MK Dons, Charlton Athletic and Oxford United manager Karl Robinson has built a solid reputation from all the clubs that he has managed. So far, the pinnacle of his achievements was getting Milton Keynes Dons promoted into the Championship in 2015. Playing in the Championship was a big step for MKD, and they returned to League 1. In October 2016, Robinson was sacked. A month later, he was back in football at Charlton Athletic, where he stayed for 18 months before moving to Oxford United. He spent nearly five years, achieved two playoff appearances and managed 274 games for the U's before being sacked in February 2023. When out of work, he was a go-to candidate in English football; he was 1/1 to be appointed at QPR in 2023 before Gareth Ainsworth.

Aitor Karanka

The Spanish-born Manager has had plenty of experience in English football, having been in charge at Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City. Karanka is currently working in Israel with Maccabi Tel Aviv.
