Who Could Be The Next Derby County Manager
A list of the potential candidates should the job become available today based on previous people appearing in the betting odds when the position was vacant last time, to others who have a profile that would fit the club in terms of the last few managers they have had.
Danny Cowley
Built his reputation at Lincoln City between 2016 and 2019, winning promotion to the Football League in his first season with the Imps. The 2018-19 season saw a further promotion for Cowley and Lincoln into the dizzying heights of League 1. This success naturally attracted more prominent suitors and in September 2019 he joined recently relegated Huddersfield Town. He managed to keep the club in the Championship but was sacked in July 2020. Portsmouth was his next club, joining Pompey in March 2021 results were mixed and at the start of 2023 with the club in 12th place he was again given the boot. Cowley (and his brother) were linked to the Oxford United job before Liam Manning was appointed in March 2023.
Frank Lampard
Having left the club in 2019, it could be argued that his time at Derby was his best managerial period. During his 13-month spell, the Rams made the Championship play-off final but lost 2-1 to Dean Smith’s Aston Villa. After missing out on the top tier, Lampard was headhunted by his former club Chelsea to replace Maurizio Sarri. That appointment did not go to plan, and in January 2021, Lampard was sacked by the club he had won so much with. A year later, his next job was at Everton, who were struggling, with relegation a distinct possibility. However, he did manage to keep the club in the EPL… just. The new season did not start well, and in January 2023, with Everton sitting in 19th place, Lampard was again sacked. Bizarrely, Lampard was asked back to Stamford Bridge when the Graham Potter experiment did not go to plan; his caretaker role only yielded one win from eleven games, and with Pochettino on his way to be the new boss, Lampard left West London.
Steve McCLaren
Another Derby County old boy who is currently sitting next to Erik Ten Hag on the Manchester United bench. The 62-year-old has managed ten clubs as well as the England national team. His return to Derby will likely only be a stopgap, but it would surprise few that if the club needed him, he would respond favourably. The bookies nearly always include his name when they publish the next Derby County manager odds.
John Terry
From the same pool of newer managers as Frank Lampard, John Terry has yet to manage a club but has picked up plenty of experience with roles as assistant manager at Aston Villa and Leicester City.
Dean Smith
Dean Smith had been touted as replacing Gareth Southgate when he leaves the National team job; however, recent managerial spells have taken the shine off his career. He built his reputation at Walsall and Brentford and was appointed at the Midland's biggest club Aston Villa.
He guided the club into the EPL in 2019 before being replaced in November 2021 with the team struggling. Since Villa, he has had a year at Norwich City which saw the Canaries unable to compete for promotion, and then eight games at Leicester City, who were relegated from the EPL under his leadership.
