East Lothian Constituency Information
East Lothian, soon to be renamed Lothian East in 2024, is a Scottish constituency that selects one Member of Parliament (MP) for the UK Parliament. The voting method used is first past the post. Currently, the seat is held by Kenny MacAskill of the Alba Party, who took over in the 2019 general election by winning against former Labour MP Martin Whitfield with a majority of 3,886 votes.
The area of the constituency includes small towns to the east of Edinburgh such as Haddington and Dunbar, as well as rural areas towards the Lammermuir Hills. The health and wealth levels of the residents are on par with the UK average.
Created for the 1983 general election, East Lothian was initially a Labour stronghold until the SNP's victory in 2015. Subsequent representatives included George Kerevan of the SNP, Martin Whitfield of Labour, and Kenny MacAskill, originally elected as an SNP candidate, then defecting to the Alba Party in 2021.
In the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, the majority of East Lothian voters, at 61.72%, preferred to maintain Scotland's place in the United Kingdom.
