Constituency Information

Wimbledon, a Greater London constituency in the UK Parliament, has been represented by Stephen Hammond of the Conservative Party since 2005.

Established through the Redistribution of Seats Act of 1885, originally part of Mid Surrey, the area underwent several changes, including boundary adjustments in 1918 and 1950 to create new seats like Mitcham, Merton, and Morden.

Historically, it has predominantly elected Conservative MPs, with exceptions during the Labour landslides of 1945-1950 and 1997-2005. The constituency, which has seen varying majorities for the Conservatives, is known for its political volatility, especially from 1994 onwards with significant Liberal Democrat presence in local councils.

In recent elections, the Liberal Democrats have posed a strong challenge, with the area showing a strong Remain preference in the 2016 EU referendum. Stephen Hammond briefly lost his Conservative whip in 2019 due to a Brexit vote, highlighting the constituency’s complex political landscape.
