The Scottish manager returned for a second spell in December 2019 on an 18-month contract; he took over from Manuel Pelligrini, whose time in charge at the club was very disappointing.
West Ham finished in 16th place, but the following two seasons under Moyes resulted in a 6th and 7th place finish, far more acceptable to fans. In June 2021, he signed a new contract that should keep him at the club until 2024. Certainly, the revenue generated from the bigger stadium has helped the club with buying new players. The longest-serving manager was the first manager of the Hammers - Sid King. He was in charge for over 20 years between 1902 and 1932.
The most successful managers at West Ham are Ron Greenwood (1961-1974) and John Lyall (1974-1989).
Under Ron Greenwood, the club won The FA Cup in 1964 and the European Cup Winners Cup the following season.
Ron Greenwood went on to manage England (1977-1982) after the resignation of Don Revie.
John Lyall who succeeded Greenwood won the FA Cup in 1975 and 1980 beating Fulham and Arsenal respectively.
After winning the FA Cup in 1975 they qualified for the European Cup Winners Cup and made it all the way to the Final before losing 4-2 to Anderlecht.
Billy Bonds(1990-1994), with 43.61%, has the best winning percentage. Caretaker manager Trevor Brooking in two spells at West Ham in 2003, managed just 14 games, but he won 9 with a strike rate of 64.2%.
The very likeable Gianfranco Zola(2008-2010) only managed 23 wins from 80 games (28.75%).
It is likely to be the League position of West Ham and whether the latest season has seen any real progression from the current manager. With the sad death of co owner David Gold in 2023 a different boardroom structure at the club may bring about further change.
