At the time of writing, I am pleased to present something I believe to be a unique piece of research on bet builder features across the best betting sites that offer these promotions.

The Bet Builder function in its various forms and names is not new. It has been around since SkyBet introduced Request a Bet via Twitter requests for specific bets unavailable on site.

The bookmaker formerly known as Surrey Sports, it is claimed, are the pioneers of offering a price on a unique bet. In reality, the practice has been going on for many years. Decades even.

However, they can receive the pioneer tag for what 'asking for a price' has become in recent times. Indeed 'RequestABet' is now trademarked. Some bookmakers have decided to call theirs 'Bet Builder,' while others have sat around a table and spat out their variations of the moniker. 

There are three distinct online offerings of the bet builder feature and a fourth which sits outside this research, namely, going into a shop and asking. Those to which I refer in this article are as follows.

• On-site bet builder functions
• Mobile-only bet builders

Request a Bet Odds Comparison

Disclaimer: It would be impossible to compare every possible combination of every football match, so I have used a straightforward 3 part bet. The options are also from the most popular and basic markets to ensure comparison of as many different bookmakers offering the feature can be completed. Going into marginal markets would not allow direct comparisons between bookmakers. The project is ongoing and more comparisons will continue to be added and a league table of best odds maintained.

Below I present only two games used and explain the bets on which I requested prices. Regardless of how I went about obtaining the prices, I present here, what odds were offered by each of the 44 Bookmakers offering Bet Builders on the games from the 64 analysed.

Germany v the Netherlands 

As you can see, the best odds offered were some 82.5% better than the worst. That's an incredible difference.

In the most simple terms, a £10 bet with one of the top 3 would return £210 against £114 with the worst!

Dortmund v Barcelona

This match saw the best bookmaker offer better than double the odds of the worst!! Thats 118% better odds from UNIBET

These prices are also an excellent example of tweet response time, as I requested both bets at the same time around mid-morning. Skybet came back with the biggest price quite quickly, while it took several hours and until around 4.30pm for Ladbrokes to respond with the lowest price. Make of it what you will.

We continued to make bet requests for games from the Premier League, Championship and Champions League throughout, eventually evaluating 20 matches and 20 request-a-bets from each of the 44 bookmakers.

Understanding Bet Builders

This type of bet exactly as it sounds – the opportunity to create, or “build”, your own specific bet by combining different markets (in the same event) into one single bet. They give bettors the opportunity to have more control, and be a bit more creative, than the standard markets which are usually offered.

How Bet Builders Work

Often in the past, a punter could get caught out with having bets made void due to "Related Contingency". This was an incident of one or more predictions where the outcome of one bet wholly or partly contributed to the outcome of the other.

These bets, under the bookmaker betting rules, were made void.

Example: The following two bets would not have been accepted as a double in the past as this would have been deemed a related contingency bet. You can understand why, as the second part of the double would ensure the first part of the double could not lose.

1. Arsenal to win at 1.80 odds
2. Arsenal to win 2-0 at 9.00 odds

So you can have things like

1. Chelsea to win
2. Chelsea to Score Over 2.50 Goals
3. Game to have Over 8 2nd Half Corners
4. Penalty to be awarded

As you add these different possibilities to your bet, so the odds increase.

There are scores of different options and tens of thousands of permutations that can be created.

As mentioned above, they are becoming ever-increasingly popular and as a result, are evolving. It’s not uncommon for bookmakers to allow punters to create bet builders and multiply those together into an accumulator. 

Bet Builder Pros and Cons

Pros

• More flexibility with your selections

• Potential high odds (something to consider if using free bets or promotions)

• Some bookmakers offer cross-game bet builders, so one selection from Arsenal vs Liverpool, with a selection from Manchester United vs Chelsea.

Cons

• Not all bookmakers offer them

• Specific features, such as Cash Out, or Acca Insurance, are not available on all bet builders

• Only show one side of particular markets. For example, you might see odds on a player having 2+ shots in a game, but you won't get odds on them not.

Can You Cash Out on Bet Builders?

The short answer is that it depends. It depends on the bet, and it depends on the bookmaker, as not all bookmakers offer cash out on their bet builders, even if they do on other bets. Bet365 – top of our list – obviously do, they wouldn’t be top if they didn’t.

As with cash out options on standard single bets, you will only be offered part of your potential winnings, and is a case of deciding to take a smaller profit (or lessen your loss) rather than risking it for the maximum return.
