The 41st Ryder Cup Matches,

Friday September 30th to Sunday October 2nd 2016

2016 Ryder Cup Introduction:

Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota will host the 41st Ryder Cup Matches as Europe go in search of a fourth straight victory. Named after English golf promoter Samuel Ryder, the biennial event between teams from Europe and the United States will begin on Friday September 30th and twenty eight matches over three days will decide who leaves the city of Chaska with the Ryder Cup trophy.Europe secured a five point victory two years ago at Gleneagles and Northern Irishman Darren Clarke succeeds Paul McGinley, who captained the 16½-11½ triumph in Scotland. The 48-year-old from Dungannon in County Tyrone will take the reins as captain and Clarke has five Ryder Cup appearances dating back to 1997. The 2011 Open Champion was a member of four winning European teams and was also a vice-captain under Colin Montgomerie and José María Olazábal in 2010 and 2012 respectively. In June the 14-time European Tour winner announced Ian Poulter as his fourth vice-captain, joining Thomas Bjørn, Pádraig Harrington and Paul Lawrie on the backroom team. Clarke has since added 2002 captain Sam Torrance to Team Europe, an appointment that will bring a wealth of Ryder Cup experience to the European teamroom. Davis Love III will captain the United States for a second time on home soil following the 38th Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club in Illinois. The 52-year-old from Charlotte in North Carolina has six Ryder Cup appearances since The Belfry in 1993 and Love has been on two victorious teams, most notably in 1999 at The Country Club in Brookline. Davis named close friend and Minnesota native Tom Lehman as his first assistant vice-captain and early in the wrap-around season the 1997 PGA Champion added Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods to Team USA.Opened in 1962, Hazeltine National Golf Club is sure to prove an exciting host venue for the Ryder Cup Matches. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, the private golf club is a Par 72 layout measuring 7,628 yards. Rees Jones lengthened a number of tee boxes and added several new bunkers ahead of the 2002 PGA Championship won by Rich Beem. The last major held at Hazeltine National was in 2009 when Y.E. Yang held off Tiger Woods to win the 84th PGA Championship. A total of seven major championships have been played at Hazeltine since the 1966 U.S. Women's Open with Tony Jacklin, Billy Casper and Payne Stewart notable winners at the Chaska course. In 2004 at Oakland Hills Country Club, Darren Clarke and Davis Love III were drawn to face each other in the Sunday Singles and following birdies on 16 and 17, Clarke conceded a putt on the 18th green to ensure the match finished all square. A half point a piece was a fair result as Europe went on to secure a nine point victory in Michigan. The mutual respect and friendship between the two major champions suggests the 41st Ryder Cup will be a sporting affair. If you are having a bet check out the current Ryder Cup Betting Odds.

Ryder Cup History & Statistics:

The Ryder Cup was first contested in 1927 when a United States team captained by Walter Hagen welcomed Ted Ray's Great Britain side to Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts. United States won the inaugural event 9½-2½ and although Great Britain were victorious at home in 1929 and 1933, it was USA who won nine of the first eleven Ryder Cup renewals. In 1979 the Great Britain selection process allowed golfers from continental Europe to qualify for the team. This decision rendered the biennial match play competition more competitive and since 1979 the aim has been achieved with ten European triumphs. Tony Jacklin who won the 1970 U.S. Open at Hazeltine National Golf Club led Europe to their first win on American soil in 1987 at Muirfield Village. The Englishman masterminded a 15-13 victory in Dublin, Ohio and in 1997 the home tie for Europe was played outside of the British Isles for the first time with Real Club Valderrama in Spain hosting the 32nd Ryder Cup.Overall the United States have won 25 of the 40 Ryder Cup meetings with only two ties in the history of the event. The last tie came at The Belfry in 1989 and below I examine recent results since the 14-14 draw at the Brabazon Course in Warwickshire.

Format Breakdown:

Ahead of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village in early June, Davis Love III revealed the format for the 41st Ryder Cup Matches at Hazeltine National Golf Club. In a press conference the American captain announced that Foursomes will be played on each of the first two mornings followed by Fourballs in the afternoons before twelve Sunday Singles matches. In a question and answers segment with pga.com following the press conference, Love was asked about a traditional foursomes start for a U.S. Ryder Cup. Davis stated that if you go back and look, alternate shot is the best format for Team USA. Below we can see that in the last twelve editions, foursomes have in fact been the worst format for the Americans. With 28 matches in total over the three days play in Minnesota, Europe as current Ryder Cup holders only need 14 points to retain the Cup. United States require 14½ points to lift the Ryder Cup trophy.Foursomes - A match between two teams comprising of two golfers. On each hole the golfers on the same team take alternate shots playing the same ball. One team member tees off on all the odd-numbered holes, and the other on all the even-numbered holes. Each hole is won by the team that completes the hole in the fewest shots. One point to the winning team over 18 holes, if all square half a point awarded to each team.

Fourballs - A match between two teams comprising of two golfers. Different to foursomes, fourball sees all four golfers play their own ball throughout the round rather than alternating shots. The better score of the two golfers in a team determines the team's score on each hole; the score of the other member of the team is not counted. Each hole is won by the team whose individual golfer has the lowest score. One point to the winning team over 18 holes, if all square half a point awarded to each team.

Holding The Lead:

In the last fifteen Ryder Cup's, Team USA have only gone on to win twice when leading after day one and both came on home soil in 2008 at Valhalla Golf Club and back in 1991 at Kiawah Island Golf Resort. On four occasions the team trailing heading into the Sunday Singles have turned it around to claim the 14½ points needed to win the Ryder Cup outright. Three of those four reversals have come in America, the last of which was in 2012 at Medinah Country Club. José María Olazábal's Europe came from 10-6 down to beat an American team captained by Davis Love III 14½-13½. Below is the day to day score breakdown from the last fifteen Ryder Cup showdowns.
