7 x First Round Predictions from Matt Edgar

I've looked over the first round to try and find some value and the following 7 selections are coming in a little over the 10/1 mark

Matthew Edgar

1st Round Tips from Edgar

Here are Matt Edgars thoughts on the first round of this years PDC World Championship

- Matthew Edgar, Darts editor and wdf professional

1. Luke Littler -1.5 Sets @ 4/5

I also think there is value here in taking Luke to win this match 3-0 at odds of 5/2 but for this selection, I'm playing it safer. Luke is a rare talent that could be a generational talent. At just 16 years old he is already earning more in prize money than most of the top names in the world of darts. This is down to his success at the Modus Super Series where he has won 2 whole series playing against the likes of his opponent in this match Christian Kist. Luke has zero fear on the oche and zero respect for his opponent in a positive sense which has drawn the admiration of the 16-time world champion Phil Taylor.

This year Luke has won 85% of all matches he has played making him more likely to win a tournament than not and his trophy cabinet will surely support this with 2 world youth championships (JDC and PDC) and a total of 23 men's ranking titles.

He takes on Christian Kist here who appeared at one point to have gotten over his health issues but recently we have seen them surface again when he averaged just 68 in defeat at the player's championship finals. This may come a bit too soon for Kist and 4/11 match odds on Littler appear to be a gift

2. Jermaine Wattimena to beat Fallon Sherrock

Powerhouse Showdown at the PDC World Championship

🎯🏆 Fallon's on fire in 2023, but Jermanie's pedigree & high season average hint at a fierce PDC World Championship 🔥 Let's not forget, Jermanie has been consistently in the top 32. It's gonna be epic! 🍿

The crowd will surely be on the side of Fallon and we have seen what that can do in the past with Ted Evetts and Suljovic going down to Fallon in this event. It is safe to say that Fallon has had a much better 2023 on the board. I spent some time with Fallon at the start of the year who told me she is dedicating herself to practice and to playing more darts, we have seen her appear in and be successful at the Modus super series along with once again picking up PDC women's series titles.

However, it is hard to get away from the pedigree of a player like Jermanie who was once in the world's top 32. He is not too far away from that ranking nowadays and has a season average just short of 93 which is 9 points stronger than Fallon.

This is Jermanie's 10th World Championship in a row getting in via the PDC pro tour order of merit which means he has been consistent in being one of the top 32 pro tour players every year. The one concern would be the fact he has lost at this stage the last 2 seasons but odds of ½ are great value.

3. Ricky Evans -1.5 sets

South African Dart Prodigy Simon Adams Takes on Champion Ricky Evans

🎯⚡ Welcome to the family, Simon Adams from South Africa 🇿🇦! At 56, after 44 years he will finally live his dream on stage, facing super-speed dart master, Ricky Evans 🏅

Simon Adams is the latest player to join us from South Africa, The 56-year-old has been playing darts for 44 years and will live his dream when walking onto that stage to play one of the fastest players in the world.

Simon has a season running average of just 73 but recently played a full week at the Super Series making it through to finals night where he picked up just one leg. He did show an improved standard with a weekly running average of just over 82 but that is still more than 10 points less than his experienced opponent here in Ricky Evans.

Ricky will be playing in his 9th PDC World championship this year and rarely tastes defeat in this opening game. A seasonal average difference of 21 points makes a 3-0 3-1 score line for Ricky look inviting.

4. Gian Van Veen 3-0 win

Gian vs Man Lok Showdown!

🎯 Seasoned pro Gian holds his ground, his amazing form and stats doing the talking. ✨ His wins over top players make him a potential threat beyond this fixture. 💥🔥

Gian will be playing Man Lok Leung in the opening game and this selection is coming more down to the greatness of Gian because Man Lok has shown signs of play this year with a few 90 averages on route to winning his 3 Asian tour titles.

However, is playing on form and stats as one of the world's top players here in Gian who on seasonal averages is 6 darts better than his opponent in this fixture. The 2 time Pro tour runner-up and Semi-finalist of the recent ITV event the European Championship only missed out late on to James Wade.

This year has been a true breakout season for Gian who has beaten almost all the top players in the sport including James Wade, Joe Cullen, Van Gerwen, Damon Heta, and Dave Chisnall just to name a few. I expect Gian to be a danger in this event beyond this fixture.

5. Ian White -1.5 sets

Back in the Game: Ian 'Diamond' White 🚀

Despite nearly dropping from the tour, Ian White's 🔄 comeback this season has been exceptional, breaking the top 30 🌍 with an impressive average of 93.84 📈 Goto's experience can't be discarded though with 2 Asian tour wins this year 🏆🏆 but will likely struggle against the Diamond.

Ian White was in real danger of dropping of the tour if he didnt have a good season this year and has found the old Ian White again this year statistically running as the 28th best player in the world with a yearly average of 93.84. The scoring power if Ian White is often under rated but thats where I feel he will get around from his opponent here as White runs at 102.54 on the scoring 9 against the 96 of his opponent Goto.

Goto has had a good year this year winning 2 asian tour titles and playing in the 2022 world cup of darts will be experience to draw on but will struggle here with Ian White and the safest option is to allow for that possible set with the minus 1.5

6. Pietrezcho win -1.5 set

Ricardo vs Suzuki: Clash of Champions

💥 Ricardo ends 2023 on a roll with a Euro tour final win. Suzuki joining from the women's series with 3 titles this year 🏆

Ricardo ended his 2023 on a high winning a euro tour final beating Peter Wright in the final of that event. He has been raking up TV experience with appears in the players championship finals, european championship and Grand slam of darts and has a good draw here with Suzuki who joins us from the womens series.

Season averages see Ricardo the 27th best player in the with an average just shy of 94 and an impressive seasonal win rate of 60% playing weekly against the worlds elite.

3 times this year Suzuki has lifted a womens series title however a yearly running average of just 78 means she will be 6 darts behind here opponent on stats. This game will have an x factor which is the crowd who often get involved in games where a male and female are against each other and the only concern is the negative reactions we have seen from Ricardo when the crowd get involved. Without this factor id be very safe offering 3-0 but for safety the -1.5 handicap is the way to go

7. Mike De Dekker to beat Horvat

🔥Horvat v. De Dekker showdown!

Fresh from a Euro Super League win, Horvat takes on rising star De Dekker in the PDC tour. 🎯 Experience v. Youth, who will take the top spot? 💪🇧🇪

horvat comes into this event on the back of winning the euro super league. A tough event featuring some of the top talents that do not have a PDC tour card. We have seen Horvat on our screens before when he has played in Euro tour events, World series and even played in the 2017 World Championship. Although he has stage experience it has not always been positive and is taking on a fast raising player here in Belgium's Mike De Dekker.

Mike has qualified for events this year such as the World matchplay and Grand prix which mean he is regular making the top 16 on the pro tour order of merit.

Earlier in the year Mike got to a pro tour final confirming his form as Horvat has yet to even make it to the pro tour level.

6 points between the pair in the averages but experience is very much on the side of Mike who represents great ½ value
