METHODOLOGY

We used IMDb to list the top sports movies for which we could find all the data. To find this data, we refined the films by 'Movies' and 'Sports' before filtering these results by 'Number of Ratings.' We repeated this process for sports documentaries, refining them by 'Documentary' and 'Sports.'

We used IMDb to find the following data for each sports movie and documentary: IMDb rating and Metascore (Metacritic was used to find the Metascore of items that weren’t available on IMDb). The additional factors of worldwide gross earnings and movie run time were compiled for all sports films.

We used Rotten Tomatoes to find each movie and documentary's Tomatometer percentage and audience score on our seeding list.

We used the entertainment-related factors (IMDb rating, IMDb metascore, worldwide gross earnings, Tomatometer percentage, and audience score) and normalised each factor out of 10 before taking an average of those scores to get our overall' entertainment score' for each sports movie. The same process was used for sports documentaries but without the 'worldwide gross earnings' factor.

We divided the worldwide gross earnings by the total minutes of run time for each film to calculate the earnings per minute of each sports movie.

We used Google Ads Keyword Planner to find the number of global Google searches for each sports movie and documentary between Nov 2022- Oct 2023.

All data was collected on 05/12/2023.
