History of the London Mayor

There have been three London Mayors since the devolution referendum of 1998.  Incumbents normally govern for four-year terms.  Each mayor manages a huge budget and aims to make London a better place for everyone who works, lives, and visits the city.

London Mayor Candidates

Sadiq Khan

Sadiq Khan has been the London Mayor since 2016 when he beat Conservative Zac Goldsmith with 57 % of the vote. He followed this with a 2021 victory over Conservative rival Shaun Bailey. He seems popular with a wide cross-section of Londoners although his 2023 extension of his ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) policy has angered drivers, although it has significantly reduced the number of vehicles entering the zone.

Susan Hall

Since June 2017, Susan Hall has served as a London-wide Assembly Member, succeeding Kemi Badenoch. Re-elected in May 2021, she led the City Hall Conservatives as deputy leader from 2018, and leader from 2019-2023. Susan has been vocal in demanding the Mayor to reduce excess expenditure and boost police funding. Her published reports delve into disability barriers, the Mayor’s performance and police protection. Since 2006, she's been a Harrow councillor, leading the conservative group from 2010-2017 and the council from 2013-2014, where she managed to balance a £6 million deficit, froze council tax and escalated investment in care services. Susan also runs a small business in Harrow. For 2023-24, she is slated to serve as the Deputy Chairman of the Police, Crime, Fire, Resilience and Emergency Planning Committees and is also a member of the GLA Oversight Committee.

Jeremy Corbyn

Jeremy Corbyn's political and personal journey is rich and diverse, deeply rooted in anti-racism, anti-imperialism, LGBT+ rights, environmental concerns, opposition to nuclear weapons and military intervention, trade union policies, and Miscarriages of Justice. He has a strong interest in human rights, peace, and justice worldwide and support communities affected by unresolved conflicts such as in Western Sahara, Chagos Islands, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, Ireland, West Papua, the Dalit community, and the Rohingya.

Corbyn served in Parliament on various committees, including Social Security (1992-2007), London Regional (2009-2010), and Justice (2011-2015).

He is currently part of the Parliamentary Assembly for the Council of Europe, UK's Socialist Campaign Group, United Nations Human Rights Council, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (Vice President), Chagos Islands All Party Parliamentary Group (Honorary President), and Inter-Parliamentary Union (Vice President).
