The Rise of Women's Boxing

It's not just boxing, women are getting more recognised in all sports and rightly so, on the boxing scene there are some very good women boxers, and we have been served up some cracking bouts, and some of the boxers are now household names with the likes of Katie Taylor leading the way for women's boxing in the UK with her unbeaten record and headlining events, Jessica McCaskill and Claressa Shields are leading names in the US.

In terms of weight divisions, the heavier weights are certainly less active, the majority of the action is coming in the Middleweight, Welterweight and Lightweight divisions with the lighter weight divisions also featuring looks of action but the mentioned three divisions seem to have become the 'Glamour' divisions in women's boxing. The OLBG expert boxing tipsters love the glamour divisions and women's boxing so be sure to head over to the Women's Boxing Predictions to see who they are backing in the upcoming bouts.

The 2012 Summer Olympics in London were a big part of the rise in Europe, this was the first time that women's boxing was included in the Olympics, and the fact that Katie Taylor and Nicola Adams both went on to win gold played a big part in that, Nicola Adams also went to Rio 2016 to win gold but her professional career only last six bouts, she became WBO Flyweight Champion in that time but retired after a draw with Maria Salinas due to problems with her eyes.

Women's Boxing Pound-For-Pound Rankings

When you look at the 'Pound for Pound' ratings, the one thing that becomes apparent is the lack of Europeans appearing in the top twenty, there are only five European boxers in the top twenty with the other fifteen coming from the Americas.

Who are the current Champions?

The middleweight division is dominated by American Claressa Shields who currently holds the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring titles, she is 14-0 in her professional career with the highlight being when defeating the then 24-0 Christina Hammer, she is another who came to light at London 2012 Olympics when winning gold at middleweight, she also went on to win gold again at Rio 2016.

The Welterweight division is another American-dominated weight with Jessica McCaskill the champion holding the WBA and the Ring title belts despite not having a perfect record with twelve wins and three defeats, her first defeat was early in her career, the second came at the hands of the top-ranked pound for pound boxer, Katie Taylor but up in this weight she has looked more comfortable and a world-beater, she beat the than 36-0 Cecilia Braekhus in 2020.

Katie Taylor's weight division is lightweight, she is the champion holding the WBA, WBC and The Ring title belts, she has a 23-1 record although some fight fans will dispute that based on her first fight with Delfine Persoon when a lot of fans thought Taylor had lost that fight, she won it thanks to the judges scores of 96-94, 96-94 & 95-95 but many would argue with those scores, despite that, there was a rematch and although close again, this time Taylor rightly came out on top.

The Katie Taylor and Delfine Persoon original fight was one of the best bouts in recent times
