2025 Betfair Chase Preview

Established in 2005 and scheduled to take place in November of each year at the Haydock racecourse, the Betfair Chase is a Grade 1 race open to runners who are aged five or older, with the race being run over a trip of three miles, one and a half furlongs, in which the runners will face a total of nineteen fences.

The race was previously run under a different name, the Lancashire Chase and was originally run at Manchester Racecourse. Paul Nicholls has a good record in the race, which was helped by Kauto Star, who won this race in 2006, 2007, 2009 & 2011.

Over the last 20 renewals, it was Kauto Star, trained by Paul Nicholls and ridden by R Walsh, who set the fastest winning time in the Betfair Chase. That runner won the race in a time of 5:54.30 in 2011. At the other end of the scale, it was the combination of trainer Venetia Williams and jockey Charlie Deutsch with Royale Pagaille who set the slowest winning time; the race-winning time was 7:07.20 in the 2024 renewal.

What the expert says...
The race has been one for successful defending champions! Kauto Star won in 2006-07, Cue Card won in 2015-16, Bristol De Mai in 2017-18 and then Royale Pagaille in 2023-24; no runner has won it three times on the bounce.
