2025 Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup Preview

The Foxhunter Chase is run over the Gold Cup distance of three miles and two and a half furlongs restricted to amateur riders only, the 'Amateurs Gold Cup' here at Cheltenham.

The race is open to runners who have either twice won a Point to Point (PTP) race or those who have finished in the first two of a Hunter Chase at least twice.

Many of the older runners will have contested handicap chases under national hunt rules in their early days. Who are our racing tipsters tipping to win the 'Amateurs Gold Cup'? Head over to the best bets for Cheltenham page to find out.

The race in 2007 was a race that was most in the bookie's favour with an over-round of 136%, whilst on average over the last 20 renewals of the Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup, the over-round has been 129%, which means the bookie expects to pay out £100 for every £129 which is bet.

Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup Trends:

Looking at the future form, is the winner worth following next time out? From the past 20 if you had followed the winner of the Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup next time out then you would have backed a total of 9 winners. Backing all 19 runners who have been out since to win at SP next time out, would have returned an LSP of +7.87. Before placing your bet on the 2025 Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup see which other runners today are being backed on the racing predictions page.

When looking over the past 20 renewals, a time of 6:37.20 was set by Zemsky in 2011, which is the quickest time over that period, the runner was trained by I R Ferguson and ridden by Mr Derek O'Connor. The slowest winning time was set in 2024 when Sine Nomine won in a time of 7:17.70, booked to ride was Mr John Dawson on this Fiona Needham trained runner.

These are the top three quickest-run Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup over the last 20 renewals:

  1. Zemsky (6:37.20) in 2011
  2. Whyso Mayo (6:42.70) in 2006
  3. Pacha Du Polder (6:42.80) in 2017
What the expert says...
You tend to get quite a few older runners in this race, over the last twenty renewals there have been 89 runners aged twelve or older and these are usually best left alone. The last winner was back in 2004 when the 13-year-old Earthmover won the race but since then not any. Arctic Times (3rd in 2008), Top Wood (3rd in 2019) and Shantou Flyer (3rd in 2023) are the only ones who have placed since.
