Europa League Format

The Europa League was introduced in the 2009-10 football season. The eventual winners qualify for the Champions League the following year.

  • In the Europa League  preliminary rounds, seeding is based on UEFA club coefficients

  • In the group stages, teams are divided into eight groups of four teams

  • The Europa League Group winners automatically qualify for the knockout round

  • The runners-up compete in playoffs against teams dropping down from the Champions League.

  • This is why it can be important to win your Europa League group as you avoid the Champions League teams who in many cases are of a higher standard.
