No one punter knows everything and no one punter can successfully study every race.

On OLBG we have a host of information including the betting school article how to find winners.

But no one can find the winner in every horse race.

The bookmakers choose to have races going off very close to each other, originally to keep the betting shop punters entertained and in the shops.

But this is to the detriment of the punter.

Whilst the punter bemoaned his losing bet he had an instant opportunity to try again, because like buses there would be another race along imminently.

So the punter was inundated with races to bet on, a quick scan of the next race and he was on again.

The punter had so many races to bet on, and in many cases, so many races to lose on.

If you think about other tasks you spend your money on I suspect you consider the offer, weigh up the costs, make a decision, think again about the decision, talk to a friend or colleague or loved one, and then finally part with your money.  But with betting due to this close proximity of off times decisions need to be made quickly, otherwise, the horses are out of the gates or jumping the first.

However if you are going to win some money then at some time you have to make a decision, but what you do not want to do is "dance to the bookmakers tune" and let the bookmakers decide on when you make this decision.

Each day in horse racing you are offered between 12 and 50 races to investigate.

Now unless you are a hermit living on a desert island there will be time pressures and other commitments you need to focus on.

It Is Your Decision

Don't let the noise from bookmakers influence which races you bet on.

In most people's lives you will have a window of time available, so it becomes imperative that the betting decisions you make are going to be yours and yours alone, it will not be physically possible to study all the races on offer - properly and fully.

So all bettors must specialise, don't let the bookies try and divert your attention with special offers, PR gimmicks, talking about what others are doing, influencing you to get involved in areas you know little about.

Remember from an earlier paragraph don't let the bookmakers decide what you do.

This specialisation can take a variety of forms

  • Just sprints
  • Just sprints over 5 furlongs in the North
  • Following particular trainers or jockeys.
  • Only betting in Grade 1 or Group1's.
  • Only betting on the All-Weather.
  • Only betting on 2-year-olds.
  • Only betting on National Hunt races.
  • Only bet in 3-year-old handicaps.

Whatever it may be it would be my contention that by doing this your decision making will be better.

Whatever you choose and it could be a few specialisations this instantly focuses your attention and your full attention, the decision is now yours and yours alone.

Once a decision is made your brain's mental stimulation kicks in and you will feel motivated to disseminate all the relevant information, other influences are negated.

Your brain is not thrashing around and all over the place but focused on the specific specialisations.

YOU have chosen.

It makes your decisions clearer and easier to make and most importantly better.

I now only concentrate in 1 meeting a day and despite all those tempting offers, all that noise you hear about backed horses that are going to scoot up, Pricewise tips, trainer comments, whispers, jockey, and trainer strike rates if it's not about my chosen meeting I ignore it.

What this does is clear my mind and gives me time to just FOCUS on the 7 or 8 races at my chosen meeting.

It is not daunting which again makes the decision process easier.

I choose the meeting the night before based on the forecast prices, how many handicaps there are, and the size of the fields.

For it is 8 - 12 runner handicap races that I am specialising in.

I do not favour races where the each-way prices only offer 1-2 so I must have 8 + runners.

Specific Races

For me, it is handicap races with 8-12 runners, it makes form study so much easier.

But to a degree my race choices for the reader are irrelevant, if you specialise on any particular niche I believe you will increase your profits.
