Home Nations Series

The Home Nations Series is a combination of four snooker tournaments all based in the UK.

The four tournaments in question are:

  • The English Open (September)
  • The Northern Ireland Open (October)
  • The Scottish Open (December)
  • The Welsh Open (February)

Neil Robertson won his first ranking event for two-and-a-half years when taking the English Open, the first event in the 2024/25 Home nations series.

The Home Nations series for 2023/24 kicked off with two consecutive wins for Judd Trump in the English and Northern Ireland Opens.

Gary Wilson then retained the Scottish Open he had won twelve months earlier, this time with a comfortable win over Noppon Saengkham, who was appearing in his first ranking final. Wilson then followed up in the Welsh Open in February with a 9-4 victory over Martin O'Donnell.

The series began in the 2016/17 season.

English Open 2024: Preview

Despite the nature of this being a short-format event where most of the rounds are played over seven frames, the winner tends to come from the top ten ranked players. Shocks do happen though and the highest ranked player to win a Home Nations event in the last twenty renewals is Jordan Brown who won the 2021 Welsh Open from a ranking of 79. Martin O'Donnell also made the most recent final of the Welsh Open from a ranking of 77.

Fourteen of the last twenty Home Nations' events have been won by a player ranked in the top ten.

Player Profiles (ranking in brackets):

Judd Trump (1) 11/4

Most punters will get interested when a potential selection has good current form combined with a previous good performance in the event in question. Judd Trump certainly ticks those boxes.

The thirty-five-year-old player from Bristol has won two of the three big tournaments played this season and made the final in the other. Add to that he is the reigning English Open champion and that he has won more Home Nations events than any other player and you could argue that 11/4 looks a big price. However, I’m concerned that Trump’s latest win in the Saudi Arabia Masters, where he picked up a cheque for £500,000, may mean that Trump may not be as focused as usual.

Trump’s latest tournament win took him to fourth place overall in the total number of ranking event victories with twenty-nine and he now just has Ronnie O’Sullivan (41), Stephen Hendry (36) and John Higgins (31) ahead of him. The worry for Trump could be that whilst he is on the same page as the three great players ahead of him when it comes to ranking events, his Triple Crown tally is poor when compared to those same players. Trump has won four Triple Crown events whereas O’Sullivan (23), Hendry (18) and Higgins (9) have done considerably better in the top events. Steve Davis (15), Mark Selby (9), Mark Williams (7), Neil Robertson (6) and Alex Higgins (5) are all ahead of Trump as well. You can argue that some of the names on that list have had plenty more attempts than Trump but it has to be said it is surprising that he hasn’t won more really big events. Winning the supposed ‘fourth major’ in Saudi Arabia may have flicked a switch in Trump and he may start to move his main focus to winning more big events and saving his energy when it comes to the regular tournaments.

The last Home Nations event held prior to this one was the Welsh Open where Trump withdrew and there must be a chance he follows Ronnie O’Sullivan’s example of not playing in as many of these standard tournaments. With the above in mind, Trump doesn’t appeal as a bet this week.

Ronnie O’Sullivan (4) 4/1

O’Sullivan has been doing his usual trick of downplaying how well he is playing and he has been keen to let everyone know that he has been playing more shots left-handed this season but it hasn’t stopped him making a quarter-final and two semi-finals in the three events played so far. More relevant may be O’Sullivan’s recent record in the four Home Nations events which have been littered with withdrawals and, surprisingly, he hasn’t won one of these events since this tournament in 2018. That is twenty-four Home Nations events since O’Sullivan last won one. He has turned up to this event on every occasion it has been played and with this renewal being played not that far from where he lives, he looks likely to be in attendance this week. Given his poor recent record in these events, 4/1 isn’t very attractive.

Neil Robertson (26) 15/2

I'm very surprised to see Robertson installed as third favourite here. Yes, he has been playing better, but we have to go back twenty-eight tournaments to find the Australian’s last event win and his ranking has dropped to twenty-six. It’s quite possible he is returning to top form but his price is not good value.

Kyren Wilson (2) 10/1

Wilson’s victory over Trump in Xian was as good as I have ever seen him play and it looks as though winning the World Championship has had a really positive effect on the thirty-two-year-old player from Kettering. The issue this week is that he is yet to win a Home Nations event and he has stated in the past he is not a fan of the short-format tournaments. That said, he should definitely be a shorter price than Robertson and 10/1 could look fair value at the end of the week.

Mark Allen (3) 11/1

It has been a very slow start to the season for Mark Allen who has lost in the early rounds of all three tournaments played so far this season. However, only Selby and Trump have won more Home Nations events than the Northern Irishman so if he can get past the first few rounds he could be a player again this week. Allen did win three tournaments last season but the worry is that he seems increasingly vulnerable early on in events so he could be a play ‘in-running' if he can get a couple of impressive wins to his name in the first two rounds.

Mark Selby (5) 10/1

Mark Selby has won four Home Nations events (only Trump with six has won more) but he hasn’t looked in the form required to win an event for some time. The four-time World Champion has stated he has been considering retirement and personal problems off the table have obviously contributed to the difficulties he is having. Too many question marks at the moment means he can’t be seriously considered at these prices.

Mark Williams (8) 12/1

Williams went agonisingly close to a 500k pay cheque when he led 62-0 in the final frame decider against Judd Trump in the Saudi Arabia Masters but a missed red let his opponent in to pinch the frame and the title. Hard to know if that experience will have a positive or a negative effect on WiIliams but the Welshman doesn’t have a great record in these events with just one career victory. He’s obviously in decent form but 12/1 looks skinny enough.

Shaun Murphy (7) 14/1

The 24/25 season has seen some improved efforts from Murphy, notably when making the Final in the Shanghai Masters and the semi-final in Saudi Arabia. The 2005 World Champion drew a blank in tournament wins last year (apart from winning the ridiculous Championship League) but did win two regular events the season before. Similarly to Mark Allen, he seems vulnerable to lesser ranked players early on in events and the draw doesn’t look especially kind to Murphy with a possible second round match-up with Neil Robertson.

John Higgins (14) 18/1

The four-time World Champion has made it to eleven semi-finals in these Home Nations events but has only gone on to lift the trophy once. Higgins hasn’t won any titles since 2021 but the bookmakers continue to not want to take any chances with his price.

Si Jiahui (20) 20/1

Si Jiahui has made a quarter-final and a semi-final already this season and looks to have a very attractive draw in the English Open. Still only twenty-two, the Chinese player looks a strong candidate to win a big event this season and will surely take increased confidence in this event after defeating Ronnie O’Sullivan for the first time in Saudi Arabia. 20/1 looks fair.

Luca Brecel (6) 33/1

2023 World Champion who seems to have gone off the boil since his victory in Sheffield. Failed to turn up for a recent qualifier and seems to be struggling with his concsistency. He's a big price if you knew he was 100% focused but that seems a very risky call.

Ali Carter (9) 25/1

Carter has really upped his consistency levels over the last couple of seasons and has bagged a couple of the smaller events (Helsinki International and the Championship League). He also made the Final in three other recent events, including the Masters where he lost out to old foe Ronnie O'Sullivan. However, Carter doesn't seem to be at his best in the Home Nations events only making one previous semi-final.

Gary Wilson (10) 40/1

The bookmakers don’t seem to rate Wilson’s chance of taking a fourth Home Nations event and his third in succession. Three wins from seven events should surely make Wilson a player to have on side in these events but one bookmaker still offers 40/1. Maybe a hat-trick is asking a lot but he surely shouldn’t be 40/1.

English Open 2024: Draw and Results

The format for the English Open has changed from a flat draw for 128 players to a seeded draw where the top 32 players enter the event after the two qualifying rounds. This is obviously a big benefit for the top 32 seeds and, to give some comparison, five of the top 32 players bowed out in the qualifiers in last year's Welsh Open.
