Road to the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship

The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was established in 1887 and crowns the best Hurling team in Ireland.

Teams can qualify for the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship via three different tournaments and depending on finishing positions teams come in at different stages.

The winners of the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship come in at the semi-final stage, the runners-up come in at the quarter-finals whilst the team finishing third in the group stage comes in at the preliminary quarter-finals.

The same format is also used for the Munster Senior Hurling Championship with teams advancing based on their finishing positions.

The other two spaces in the playoffs come from the two teams who make the Joe McDonagh Cup final, they both advance to the preliminary quarter-finals.

This all means the better your season performance, the fewer games you need to win in the playoffs to be crowned champions.
