More than one in five (22%) Brits plan to bet on the Grand National - but just two per cent think £85 for an Aintree ticket is good value for money

Major YouGov survey by Online Betting Guide reveals just under one in ten (9%) make their only horse racing bet of the year on the National while almost 90 per cent (88%) say they would rather gamble with betting sites on the race than pay for Netflix

The survey of 2061 people across the Great Britain also found:

  • More than one in ten (11%) view betting as entertainment like going out to the cinema

  • Only 14% say they would sacrifice their Grand National bet in order to buy a partner flowers or chocolates instead

A major YouGov survey has found over one in five Brits are planning to place a bet on the Grand National Runners.

The study on behalf of Online Betting Guide (OLBG) found 22% of those asked will be having a gamble on Britain’s biggest horse race on Saturday 15 April.

A higher proportion of men plan to definitely bet (26%), but it is nowhere near as popular with women with 70% saying they definitely have no intention of having a wager (18% definitely will, 12% don’t know). In males, six out of ten have no plans to take part.

And overall, that figure falls to 66%, meaning a third will definitely have a punt or don’t know whether they will or won’t place a bet.

The cost of going to a major racing event has been in the spotlight after a fall in attendance at Cheltenham due to tickets costing more than £100.

Normal entry to Aintree for the Grand National costs £85 - and only two per cent of those asked thought that represented good value for money.

How to spend money during the cost of living crisis also came into focus in the survey, with respondents asked if they would rather divert the money they intended to spend betting on other things.

Nine out of ten (88%) of those planning to bet on The Grand National said they would rather bet than spend the money on a streaming service such as Netflix.

And only 14% said they would hold back from betting in order to buy a gift for their partner, such as flowers or chocolate.

The betting industry has tried to establish itself as a lifestyle industry, and over one in ten (11%) asked say they view betting as entertainment similar to buying a cinema or show ticket.

Note: All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc.  Total sample size was 2061 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 5th - 6th April 2023.  The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).
