What is F1 Worth Per Lap and Point for Drivers and Teams?

Since the arrival of Drive to Survive, Formula 1 has boomed in popularity with more and more fans taking an interest in the pinnacle of motorsport. Their hope of attracting more US viewers appears to have worked, with more US betting sites offering odds on Grands Prix. 2023 will even see three US races on the calendar, in Austin, Miami, and Las Vegas.

The 20 drivers on the grid work tirelessly week in, week out. However, it’s what happens in the race that counts. That’s why we wanted to find out which drivers earned the most per completed lap. We’ve looked at the salaries of drivers and teams, and the laps completed to determine how much each driver earned per lap during the 2022 season.

1. Lewis Hamilton - $29,788 per lap raced in 2022

Lewis Hamilton takes the top spot, earning close to an estimated $30,000 per lap in 2022. Hamilton’s 2022 season was certainly one to forget. The 7-time World Championship winner struggled in his porpoising Mercedes car, bouncing to a 6th place finish in the driver standings, two places behind teammate George Russel in his first season in a Mercedes.

2. Max Verstappen - $29,202 per lap raced in 2022

Max Verstappen takes second place, earning almost $600 less than Hamilton per lap. Verstappen won his second World Championship in 2022, steamrolling his way to two consecutive titles. The Dutchman completed 1,271 laps, which was more than any other driver.

3. Lando Norris - $20,312 per lap raced in 2022

Completing our top three is Lando Norris, whose estimated earnings per lap are just over $20,000. Norris’ 2022 season wasn’t quite as successful as 2021, however, he still maintained a level of consistency, finishing in the points in the majority of his races. Norris earned just one podium in 2022, finishing third at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, three less than the season prior.

It takes less than 34 laps for Lewis Hamilton to earn $1 million

Looking at the driver's salaries, and laps completed, we’ve worked out the number of laps it takes each driver to earn $1 million.

1. Lewis Hamilton - 34 laps taken to earn $1m

Lewis Hamilton takes the top spot, taking just 34 laps to earn $1 million. The fewest number of laps of any F1 Grand Prix is the iconic Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, where the drivers race just 44 laps. This means that at every GP Lewis Hamilton races, he will earn at least $1 million. Hamilton will also earn just over $2 million at seven GPs throughout the season - Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Austria, Monaco, The Netherlands, and Hungary.

2. Max Verstappen - 35 laps taken to earn $1m

Max Verstappen narrowly takes second place, racing just one lap more than Hamilton to earn $1 million. Verstappen started his title defense in the worst possible way, failing to finish the first GP in Bahrain, as well as the third race in Australia. However, in these races, Verstappen still would have made $1 million, crashing out in the 54th lap in Bahrain, and the 38th lap in Melbourne.

3. Lando Norris - 50 laps taken to earn $1m

Lando Norris completes our top three, racing just 49 laps before earning $1 million. Norris crashed out in just two races, Brazil, and Miami, where he crashed out in the 50th lap and the 39th lap respectively, meaning in Brazil, he would have just earned $1 million. This also means Lando Norris would have earned $1 million at every race other than the Belgian Grand Prix.

1. Lance Stroll - $500,773 earned per point

Lance Stroll takes top spot, earning an estimated $500k per point earned during the 2022 season. Stroll achieved just 18 points across the season, less than half of his teammate, Sebastian Vettel. This was Stroll’s lowest points tally since 2018, a season where he earned 6 points racing for Williams.

2. Alex Albon - $463,951 earned per point

Williams’ new signing, Alex Albon, takes second place, earning just under $464k per point. Despite their history, Williams have struggled in recent years, finishing in the bottom three in each of the last 5 seasons, taking 10th in three of these seasons. Albon replaced the Mercedes-bound George Russell and took just three races to earn his first point at his new team. Albon raced 57 laps on the hard tire, before making a compulsory pitstop on the final lap to clinch 10th place.

3. Nicholas Latifi - $450,695 earned per point

Completing our top three is Nicholas Latifi, who earned an estimated $450k per point. The Canadian achieved just two points across the calendar. His 9th place finish at the Japanese Grand Prix was his only points finish of the season. It was at the same GP, during practice, where Latifi amused fans by taking the wrong turn, blaming his car by claiming that it felt ‘strange’. Despite this, the Canadian made amends by earning his team two points.

1. Red Bull - $18,150 cost per lap

The Constructor’s Champions for 2022 take another number one spot, paying their drivers an estimated $18,150 per completed lap. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez completed 2,454 laps across the season, with just five DNFs between them. However, Red Bull’s 2022 season wasn’t without controversy, as it was revealed they had breached a $145 million cost cap by 1.6%. Red Bull were handed a $7 million fine, and a 10% deduction in their aerodynamic testing allowance.

2. Mercedes - $16,850 cost per lap

Mercedes takes second place, costing an estimated $17,000 per completed lap by drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Despite persistent porpoising issues, Mercedes completed more laps than any other team, proving how reliable their engine was, with just 3 DNFs. Russell even earned himself the nickname, ‘Mr. Consistent’, after finishing in the top 5 in the first 9 races. Russell finished the season with a top-5 finish in 19 out of the 22 races on the calendar.

3. McLaren - $16,028 cost per lap

McLaren complete our top three, costing an estimated $16,000 per completed lap. There was a lot of expectation and hope for McLaren’s season, after finishing fourth in the Constructors' Championship in 2021 - a season which included an incredible 1-2 finish in Monza. However, McLaren finished 5th in 2022, largely due to Daniel Ricciardo’s struggles, with the Australian finishing just seven races in the points.

1. Williams - $459,533 cost per point

Williams takes the top spot with a cost per point of almost $460,000. Williams just earned 6 points in 2022 which was more than four times lower than ninth-placed AlphaTauri, and almost three times lower than their total during the season before.

2. Aston Martin - $414,543 cost per point

Aston Martin takes second place, costing almost $415k per point in 2022. When Aston Martin replaced BWT Racing Point ahead of the 2021 season, there was a lot of excitement due to the success of their predecessor in 2020. However, Aston Martin hasn't lived up to expectations. Their total of 77 points in 2021 was less than half of Racing Points 2020 tally, and in 2022, Aston Martin achieved just 55 points.

3. McLaren - $246,774 cost per point

Completing our top three is McLaren, who paid an estimated $246k per point achieved in 2022. McLaren’s total of 159 points was only enough to finish in 5th place in the Constructors’ standings, one place lower than 2021, and over 100 points fewer too.

We used Mostly F1 to find out the number of laps completed by each driver in 2022.

We then used Total Motorsport for the salaries of each driver. Figures were converted from Euros (€) to USD ($) and GBP (£) on the 23rd of February 2023.

We used Salary Sport for Kevin Magnussen’s salary.

Reserve Drivers were not included in the data.
