The NEMCA, or North East Mayoral Combined Authority, will have a Mayor plus seven member councils with the vote taking place on 2nd May 2024.

Mayor is a key role that sees several functions that they will look over in the North East including:

  • housing and regeneration
  • education, skills and training
  • the adult education budget
  • the functional power of competence
  • housing and planning, including mayoral development areas and corporations, land and acquisition powers
  • finance, through council precepts and business rate supplements
  • transport, including bus grants and franchising powers

Labour are currently the 1/2 favourites with William Hill to win the Mayoral Election in May with Kim McGuinness the candidate for the party for the role.

Jamie Driscoll is the second favourite in the betting market

Jamie Driscoll is the current Mayor of the North of Tyne in a position that he has held since he won the 2019 North of Tyne mayoral election with 56.1% of the vote.

Driscoll was barred from the selection process to determine a Labour Party candidate back in June 2023 with various allies stating the decision was unfair.

This led to Driscoll resigning from the Labour Party and ultimately deciding to run in the 2024 North East Mayoral Election as an independent.

Other political markets are up including potential by-election's

By-Election betting has grown more and more in recent months with a whole host of different by-elections being held across the UK due to various incidents.

Smarkets continue to offer odds on the potential By-Election in Blackpool South with Labour the heavy favourites to take back the seat that was won by Scott Benton and the Conservatives back in 2019.

Benton is now an independent after having the Conservative Party whip suspended in April 2023 and was suspended from the Commons for 35 days due offering to leak confidential information and lobby ministers in return for money.
