Labour are the 1/20 favourites to win the Kingswood By-Election coming up on Thursday

The Kingswood By-Election is on the way this Thursday and bookmakers continue to offer odds on which party will be the winner at the polls in this constituency.

It looks increasingly likely that it'll be Labour who wins judging by the latest betting odds with bookies now shortening them into 1/20 to win at Kingswood.

Damien Egan is the Labour candidate and he has been endlessly campaigning in the past month to win the seat which was made up for grabs back in January.

Egan had to resign as Mayor of Lewisham to run for the Kingswood role and had previously served in that role for the last 6 years.

Now though he's looking to become Kingswood's MP and the betting odds put him well clear of Conservative candidate Sam Bromiley to win the seat.

Conservative MP Chris Skidmore resigned as Kingswood MP back at the start of January

Conservative MP Chris Skidmore was previously the energy minister under Theresa May and sensationally resigned from his role as MP for Kingswood last month after the government set out plans to offer new licences for oil and gas drilling in the North Sea.

Skidmore was MP in Kingswood for the last 14 years and now it looks like the constituency will move from Conservatives to Labour following his dramatic resignation.

The MP's resignation spoke about Rishi Sunak's green plans saying he was resigning, "in protest at the government's decision to prioritise and politicise new oil and gas licences above a sensible investment plan for the future".

What the expert says...

The sitting Conservative MP Chris Skidmore resigned from his seat after stating his opposition to further oil and gas extraction. He had previously signed the UK's net zero pledge into law; according to the bookmakers, the Tories in this by-election may come close to that figure in the percentage of votes they receive from the Kingswood voters.

Wellingborough By-Election also set to take place this Thursday

There's another by-election taking place on Thursday with Wellingborough also up for grabs and it's Labour who are clear favourites to win in this constituency too.

Labour are currently 1/10 to win the Wellingborough seat with Conservatives joint second favourites here alongside Reform UK.

It looks likely that this will signal another blow to Rishi Sunak's time as Prime Minister ahead of the expected General Election set to take place later this year.
