Lionel Messi now 8/15 favourite to win the 2023 Ballon d'Or award

Lionel Messi is now just 8/15 with UK Betting Sites to win the 2023 Ballon d'Or award in a season in which he won the World Cup with Argentina.

Messi hasn't had the greatest season with his club though and that could well harm him when it comes to winning the award later this year.

The Argentine's odds to win the Ballon d'Or in that time have gone from 1/4 to 8/15 with his chances of winning now 65%.

Paddy Power have him as the clear favourite at the top of the betting market ahead of Erling Haaland with it looking like a two horse race.

2023 Ballon d'Or Winner Odds Probability
Lionel Messi 8/15 65.2%
Erling Haaland 11/8 42.1%
Vinicius Junior 16/1 5.9%
Karim Benzema 28/1 3.4%

Erling Haaland is 11/8 in the betting market

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland is now as short as 11/8 to win the Ballon d'Or this season as his wonderful campaign draws to a close.

City still have the FA Cup Final and Champions League Final to play in to cap off a wonderful debut season for the Norwegian striker.

It may well take winning those two trophies to place him above Messi in the market as the favourite for this award.

The Ballon d'Or ceremony this year is pencilled in for Monday 16 October at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, France

We take a closer look at the record winners of the award

Since 1956, the Ballon d'Or award has been annually presented by the French news magazine France Football.

Stanley Matthews, an Englishman, became the inaugural recipient of the award in 1956, securing 47 votes.

This prestigious accolade recognises the player who is deemed to have had the most outstanding performance in the previous season, with the voting process involving football journalists, as well as coaches and captains of national teams.

The all-time record holders for the Ballon d'Or are as follows:

Lionel Messi, with an impressive 7 wins; Cristiano Ronaldo, with 5 wins; Michel Platini, Johan Cruyff, and Marco van Basten, each with 3 wins.
