Punchestown Course Guide

Considered by many as the home of National Hunt racing in Ireland, Punchestown has several meetings throughout the season culminating in the five-day Punchestown Festival in the Spring (late April).

It has, of course, the unique ‘banks’ cross-country course and hosts the cream of national hunt racing throughout the October to June season.

There is an early season Grade 1 Hurdle at the track with the Morgiana Hurdle, a race which trainers target with some of their best, with the likes of Faugheen, Sharjah, State Man & Brighterdaysahead all winning the race.

The John Durkan Memorial Chase is a popular race; the Grade 1 Chase attracts some top-class types with previous winning honours going to the likes of Djakadam (x2), Sizing John, Min (x3) and Allaho.

For fans of the Grand National, Punchestown also hosts a Grand National Trial in February, two months before the big race itself. Not many of the winners go on to run at Aintree next time out; the last to do so was Dounikos in 2019, who failed to finish the race.

Each season, the Racing Fixtures at Punchestown are published and available in advance, so you can plan either if you want to go racing at Punchestown or plan your betting. The dates of the Punchestown Festival and ticket information will also be available.

Punchestown Draw Bias

❌ The stall with the worst loss at Punchestown in the win market when breaking it down to race trips is stall 0 over a trip of 1m7f, backing all runners in this stall over that trip over the past five years would have returned a loss of -20.00.

Here we have the draw bias for Punchestown taken into consideration in races with ten or more runners. We will break down the figures by race trips. Draws can be much more important in shorter trips, where runners do not have time to find their position during the race, meaning the draw is probably more important than in races over longer distances.

  • Mile (1m to 1m1½f)

The following table shows a breakdown of a group of trips and shows how each position of the draw does, for example, in a twelve-runner race would be Low (Stalls 1-4), Mid (Stalls 5-8) and High (Stalls 9-12). The positions will always be the lowest stall number to the highest.
