T20 Cricket World Cup History and Format

Twenty20 Cricket was introduced in 2003 to English domestic matches between counties. The format has captured the public imagination as well as television broadcasters who like the short-hours format.

In 20/20 Cricket which is sometimes referred to as Twenty 20 or T20, two teams are allocated 20 overs to amass the largest amount of runs.

There are specific batting, bowling and fielding restrictions to make the game exciting and competitive which include bowlers only being able to bowl a maximum of overs, and fielders needing to be inside/outside the fielding circle.

The opinion is split over the merits of T20 cricket with some seeing that it has “dumbed down” the game and had a detrimental effect on test cricket.

However, crowds at games are healthy and there is no doubt it has attracted casual cricket goers to attend matches.

There is now a T20 ICC World Cricket Tournament + tournaments throughout the cricketing world so the governing bodies endorse the format, and if anything more tournaments are expected in the coming years.
