Emidio Pepe has won his last two races, one on the flat, and then used his flat speed to win over hurdles at Bordeaux Le Bouscat. He took the lead after the second last and accelerated towards the final flight to take a three to four length lead, but then thought twice about jumping the last at speed and put the brakes on and hopped over the flight. By which time he had surrendered the lead and had to use his flat speed to retake the lead on the run-in. That race should have given him enough experience to win again as his jumping had been good until the final flight.

Although pulling up at Bangor in his first race, he has since been unbeaten in three races, winning two handicap chases and a handicap hurdle. His chase mark has jumped back from 107 to 123. With Callum Pritchard riding and taking off seven pounds, he could be competitive as a hold-up horse in this higher class race.

Strong Leader has improved markedly over the last year, winning his last two three-mile hurdles at Grade 1 at Aintree in April and at Grade 2 at Newbury first time out this season in November. He was only second on his previous visit to Ascot in a Grade 2 over shorter in November 2023, also his only race on a right-handed course in 13 runs so far, but now looks a proven top-class staying hurdler over three miles.
