Lee Carsley is the 7/4 favourite to become the permanent England manager

Betting markets remain open with bookmakers on who will be the next permanent England manager after Gareth Southgate's departure following the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain earlier this summer.

Lee Carsley is the current interim manager of England after the FA chose the U21s manager to replace Southgate on a temporary basis following the England manager's resignation.

Spain have had great success by bringing youth manager's through the ranks, with current boss Luis de la Fuente having managed the Under-19s, Under-21s and Under-23s for the last decade before winning the Euros with the first team this summer.

It could well be that the FA choose to follow in Spain's footsteps and choose Carsley on a permanent basis, with BetVictor's latest odds putting him as the 7/4 favourite.

Those odds suggest a 36.4% probability of him becoming the next England manager and good performances against Ireland and Finland will surely speed that process up.

What the expert says...
Lee Carsley is the clear favourite to get the England managerial job on a permanent basis on the eve of his first game in charge as interim manager. The FA will surely see this international break as an interview for Carsley as they look to get a permanent replacement for Gareth Southgate.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is second favourite in market at 4/1

Eddie Howe has been linked with the England job following Southgate's departure but current club Newcastle would want him to stay in charge going forward.

Howe sits as second favourite in the betting odds at 4/1 to be the next England manager and Newcastle's sporting director Paul Mitchell has said it's no surprise that he's been linked.

Reports from the Daily Mail see Mitchell say, "I've never been a guy scared of interest in any of our staff members, especially our head coach, and especially from a level of organisation that the FA is."
