About the MLB World Series
The World Series is a tournament contested between the AL (American League) and NL (National League) champions over a seven-game series.
This has been ever-present since 1903, after 160+ matches during the regular season, eight teams battle it out for the crown.
Six of those teams are those who won their divisions and the other two are decided from two wildcard games. All playoff games are decided by a best-of-seven series.
The New York Yankees lead the way with World Series wins with a total of twenty-seven from forty final appearances.
Some sixteen behind them on eleven wins are the St. Louis Cardinals with both the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox on nine wins apiece.
American League teams have won 57% of the World Series (68 of 119), with four of the last seven going to the American League.
