Overview

I'm diving deep into the murky waters of a polluted lake in the Ugliest Catch, a twist on the familiar fishing genre you can find at the slot sites listed above. This adventure, brimming with slot games magic, pulls me into a world where three-headed catches and toxic secrets lurk beneath the surface. With a grid setup of 5x5 and 243 paylines, it's a highly volatile chase with a decent chance of success, thanks to its 96.11% RTP. The thrill intensifies with Enhanced Cells and Nolimit City's signature xBet and xWays features, promising more wins in these uncharted waters. Hang around for my full dive into this underwater saga.

100 Spins Test

This 100 Spin test was updated by Steve Madgwick on 26/10/2023

100 spins is not a Real Test

We give every slot a 100 spin test to see just what it can do, or not as the case can often be - 100 spins is no reflection of the likelihood of any other 100-spin session, as RTP's are set over many millions and probably billions of spins. So this 100 spin test is just for entertainment and insight purposes

Test Comments

Before I round this level test I'll just put out these that NLC have lost a way with this game and previous release Space Donkey, just not as enjoyable as the usual releases and I'm wondering if the increase in new games is having an affect - 'Road Kill', Due out on 7th NOvember sounds like it might be returning to the normal levels expected from NoLimit City.

Anyway onto the test, the average winning spin value of 5.28x is a little misleading as in fact the biggest base game winning spin was just a 3x, and the session was only saved and came out just about even at 100.5% due to hitting the three scatter bonus after 15 spins paying a 70.8x return.

Nice game, medium frequency wins at 19/100 feels very slow with the mechanic on this occasion and I'm looking forward to future releases from my favourite studio.

Game Data

Ahh, a day at the lake. Sunshine, a picnic hamper filled to the brim with goodies and beautiful turquoise water to cool down in. Unfortunately, the lake in The Ugliest Catch is more of a nightmare than a dream. It glows up at night as it’s filled with toxic green water. And rather than being able to spot beautiful bright-coloured fish, you’ll only spot mutant radioactive creatures.

As well as the Enhancer Cells already mentioned in the summary,  there are 3 sets of Free Spins rounds up for grabs. Here, the amount of Free Spins varies between 8 and 10 spins.

Keep reading my in-depth Ugliest Catch review to find out about all aspects of this brand-new slot game. Let's press ahead.

Graphics, Music, and Sound Effects

The creatives are green…very green. Toxic green to be exact. You’ll discover the lake’s underwater scene filled with strange-looking fish, turned nasty from all of the poisonous dumping that has taken place there. You can be sure of finding the ugliest catch trawling in this lake. The reel imagery is vivid and shows various freaky characters below the murky water.

The music and sound effects originate from the deep south of the USA. You’ll hear plenty of banjos and whistling - which may evoke feelings of fear from certain horror films set in that corner of the world.

Key Features

Now that I've told you about the summary, intro, graphics, music, and sound effects, next up will be the key game features. This will help you paint a picture of the Ugliest Catch.

At OLBG we write slot games reviews that include up-to-date info about essential features such as the theme, paylines, reels, bet range, and bonuses. I’ll finish off the review by talking about my play experience, first impressions and my expert verdict so don't miss anything.

Theme – Fishing

The star of the show is The Fisherman, who let’s just say, isn’t exactly Brad Pitt. You see his toothless smile holding up his prize fish (which is about as handsome as he is). You’ll also witness him passed out in his boat after drinking a worrying amount of beer. And you even have the joy of seeing him sit on the loo which is a sight to behold.

The visuals show a swamp filled with noxious green water where the water is so murky you can't see your hand in front of your face. The Fisherman's boat is strewn with a shedload of empty beer tinnies. An animation on the screen comes from a hand-crushed beer can meandering its way to the bottom of the grotty lake.

The reels are brighter and include an array of weird-looking symbols. In order of highest value first, there is an orange pirana fish, a small green fish with big eyes, and a green and white fish. Next up is the multiplier symbol, a large blue fish, red wellies, a set of severed feet attached to a weight (oh dear, this doesn’t look good), a frog, a tin of worms and worms on a fishing hook.

Reels

Here we have another title with 5 reels, you’ll also find 5 rows which is a pretty traditional setup.

Paylines

There are 243 non-adjustable paylines where you can trigger winning combos.

RTP

Return to Player or RTP as it’s commonly known is used on all slot sites to inform players what percentage of their stakes will be returned to them over the long term. Therefore, the higher the percentage the better. On average, the number is usually somewhere between 94% and 96%. The Ugliest Catch game is slightly over average at 96.11%.

Nolimit City offers a range of RTP rates with 96.11% being the highest. They also offer operator rates of 94.19% and 92.37%. So it’s worth shopping around to find the best RTP.  But hey, we've saved you some time and have listed a few rates at some of the popular UK online casinos and added these sites to our table below.

It’s worth mentioning that there’s more than RTP to think about when deciding where to play. Factors such as payment options, game library, customer support and welcome bonuses and deals are also important. You can read about all these factors and more when you read our casino reviews.

Most players nowadays want to try out more than one game. If this sounds like you, we’ve created this handy page with the slot sites we recommend. If you’re in the UK you can play any of these games straight away.

Stake Range

You’ll discover a wide bet range for the Ugliest Catch slot game which starts at £0.20 and goes right up to £100.

Max Win

The max win feature of the game is called ‘Kiss My Go-To-Hell’ and awards the game’s maximum theoretical payout of 50,000x your stake.

Wild Shape

The Wild for the Ugliest Catch is depicted by a Fisherman Wild Symbol. The Fisherman Wild acts as a collector for any multiplier values from the Fish Symbol values.

Free Spins

There are 3 sets of Free Spins rounds available for the Ugliest Catch called the Lunker Spins, Hawg Spins and Honey Hole Spins.

  • Landing 3 FS Scatters trigger Lunker Spins with 6 opened enhancer cells, resulting in 8 Free Spins.

  • Landing 4 FS Scatters trigger Haw Spins with 8 opened enhancer cells, resulting in 9 Free Spins.

  • Landing 5 FS Scatters trigger Honey Hole Spins with 10 opened enhancer cells, resulting in 10 Free Spins.

Landing 1 extra Scatter in Lunker or Hawg Spins results in opening up 2 enhancer cells and getting 1 additional Free Spin which is good going.

Jackpot

Most slot games nowadays don't have a jackpot element and the Ugliest Catch is no exception. So if jackpots are your thang, you should check out this page with the best jackpot slot games.

Play Experience & First Impressions

As soon as you start playing you can tell it’s a Nolimit City game immediately from the dodgy-looking characters on the reels and the tongue-in-cheek theme. The Enhancer Cells Feature worked well on the grid. They are located at the top and bottom of each reel and get locked into position. When triggered to open they reveal either a Fisherman Wild, Big Berta, ×Ways or any normal paying symbols. Here’s a rundown of what each symbol does:

  • xWays® can only land on locked positions.

  •  xWays® symbols will transform into a normal paying symbol. It will reveal 2-4 symbols of the same kind and increase the number of ways to win.

  • Fish Trophy and Big Berta both have random multiplier values which can be won during the Kill N’ Grill Wild Fishing feature. Values for the Fish Trophy Symbol range from 2x up to 5000x. Values for Big Berta start from 100x and go up to a mega 5000×.

The combo of the xBet, xWays and Enhancer Cells worked well together to increase the chances of winning and was an enjoyable element of play.

The Kill N’ Grill Wild Fishing Feature (which was mentioned above) was also a standout component of the game. This feature triggers when you land a golden Fisherman Wild in the Enhancer Cells in the base game. During this round, multiplier values are collected from the Fish Trophy Symbols and are then multiplied and added to your payout so you want to look out for these symbols!

The Free Spins are always the bread and butter of any slot game and these were straightforward and fun. Some of the recent Nolimity City games have been too complicated but this one has simple rules. The Honey Hole Spins where you can build up multipliers that stay sticky were particularly enjoyable.

Expert Verdict

I've been a huge fan of Nolimt City’s games over the last few months, especially The Crypt and Disturbed as they are at their best when they're teetering on the edge of decency. Ugliest Catch doesn't really hit the mark in comparison to others as it’s much tamer. It’s not one of my favourite Nolimit City games but I certainly prefer it in comparison to all of the other fishing games out there on the market. However, this is a question of taste as fishing games are highly popular around the world. In the press release for the game, we’re told that ‘When they’re not creating something totally new - Nolimit City are known to take established slot concepts and twist them into their very own concoction. Ugliest Catch is not one of their headliner acts but it’s a fun twist on the fishing theme nevertheless.

The storytelling aspect is strong, as it is in all of their games, the hapless fisherman fishing in a radioactive lake is definitely a break from the norm. The features which are very important were fun and straightforward, I enjoyed the Enhanced Cells Feature and it was a wise design idea with the xBet and xWays Features. The sticky multipliers were a nice touch with Big Berta. And you can fish for some big wins with a multiplier going up to 5000x which is one to look out for. Plus of course, the max win at 50,000x is one of the highest around at the moment. Their max wins are always huge on Nolimit City games which ties in with creating (mainly) extremely high-volatility games.

Would I recommend the Ugliest Catch to you? Yes, I would, but it’s not one of their strongest games. However, it makes a welcome change to other fishing games out there.
