I'm normally averse to conditional jockey races, but this looks like an interesting one. Bluebella was noted way back in 2023 where the mare ran up her only win (off 73) and followed that with two close 2nds (off 80 and 84). Her next race saw her falling at the last when holding every chance, and since then I thought her confidence had taken a serious knock as the mixed results show. Bluebella makes her stable debut for Samuel Drinkwater, whose stats since March show 4 wins and 4 places from 18. Likewise, jockey Samuel Drinkwater has had a good start to this season with 3 wins and 7 places from 11. Hopefully, the change of scenery can rekindle Bluebella's spark.

The 9-year-old Under Curfew catches my attention here for a number of reasons. Namely, career stats of 9 wins and 27 places from 89 runs, trainer's Brighton stats of 58 wins (12%) and 198 places (40%) from 500, and finally the jockey's stats, Alexandria McDonnell, who has had 3 places from 5 (60%) this season, and last season's stats of 5 wins (20%) and 11 places (44%) from 25.

Masterclass has been such a frustrating horse for me since going into my notes thirteen runs ago in March '24. The grey was a keeping on half-length 2nd of 7 that day off a mark of 68 and has since only been placed twice, to much chagrin. He did okay on the penultimate start though, when following a four and a half month break, he was a 5L 5th of 17 at Thirsk off 55. His last run is best forgotten as he blew it when stumbling at the start, but I thought that in both of those races he wasn't unduly pushed too hard. We can expect better today off a career-low mark of 52. Trainer Paul Midgley's Nottingham stats read 13 wins and 42 places from 73, 13% W and 58% P respectively.

Carnival Day was noted in both of his outings this year. Firstly, when a 9L 3rd of 7 at Brighton where he was eased when the chance had gone. More notably, last time out when 5L 4th of 11 at Epsom 27 days ago. He tailed the field in that race and made good headway from the turn in to be nearest finish. Although the winner, Asgard's Captain, won emphatically by 4.5L, Carnival Day was just over half a length behind the second, Master Builder. The 3rd horse (a head in front), Small Fry, has since won at Chester. Races off 2lb lower today.
