Twelve months age Edward Lynam's Jon Riggens stayed on well final furlong to lead last strides to win this race. The Requinto gelding, also won over six furlongs at the Curragh later in the summer, he generally needs his first run back, so there was plenty to like about his performance at Naas last month which saw him finish fourth against race-fit rivals. That first outing in over six months should have left him spot-on for this.

Goodwood Odyssey overcame a blocked run to win at Sandown over 1m2f last month. He got stopped and yet picked up well to win cosily from the re-opposing Brioni. That was his third run at Sandown, and he has won twice and placed on the all-weather at Kempton. He looks a real stayer and should step forward again with a clean passage up the long Newbury straight. The handicapper has raised him 7lbs to a mark of 90 which is fair leaving him due to carry 9 stone. As a hold up horse his drawn in stall 13 is not a major concern.

Gorak is well handicapped down to a mark of 95. He ran a solid race in the Bunbury cup here last summer when rated 105 won by Biggles. Gorak seemed to blow up when ridden prominently over course and distance during the Craven meeting. He likes it at Newmarket and seven furlongs looks to be his favourite trip. Charlie Fellowes trained the winner of the Victoria cup last Saturday and can strike again with Gorak with Callum Shepard booked for the ride.

Relief Rally was superb for his past connections as a juvenile. She won four times and just lost out at Ascot by a nose! She finished off her juvenile season with a big win in the Grade 2 Lowther stakes at the York Ebor Festival. Relief Rally proved last season she is not ground dependent winning on ground from soft to good to firm. She ran well here on her first run for new connections when fourth in the Fred Darling stakes. The 1000 guineas winner Elmalka finished third that day staying strongly, meanwhile Relief Rally faded over the seven-furlong trip. I think dropping back to six furlongs is fine, and she will stay. Relief Rally enjoys a sex allowance of 5lbs from the boys which is another positive.

George Boughey's string are running well at the moment, and he can take this with Composite who improved with each start in maiden/novice company on the all-weather, culminating in a penalty-defying performance at Kempton where he gave away plenty of ground on the home bend but still ran on strongly to win going away. He'd been off for 103 days when switching to turf for his handicap debut at Windsor last month, and perhaps the run was just needed as he travelled up okay but edged left as he tired in the closing stages, unable to justify favouritism. He could well have improved again.

Giavellotto meets Tower of London for the third time. The ran in valuable staying races in the Middle East in February and March. The key reason why Giavellotto might reverses placings tomorrow is the distance of this race. Giavellotto has looked a winner at times over further but just doesn't fully see out two miles. I am confident that 1m6f is his best trip, and he enjoys good to better ground. Hopefully, the rain showers miss York tomorrow. Giavellotto won the Yorkshire Cup last year and has a strong chance tomorrow in receipt of 3lbs from Tower of London. It will be difficult for Vauban and Gregory on their first runs of this season.

In the end he beat the field comfortably bar the winner, Tony Montana. Loyal Touch won and finished second at Newcastle over 10 furlongs under a claiming jockey before Chester. He is a strong galloper who should enjoy York and carrying a low weight of 8-10. A draw in stall 3 is good for this likely front-runner.

Northern Express always goes well in mile or seven-furlong handicaps at York. Last season he just failed to get there in time when third off a 5lb lower mark. He did beat Vafortina here over seven furlongs in July which showed his versatility. Good ground is fine for Northern Express who is well drawn in stall 9. Paul Mulrennan will try and thread a path through the pack to arrive there late and full of running. I thought he ran well in the Thirsk Hunt Cup when not knocked about at the end. It's a tricky race so only the one selection.

Marine Wave finished with pace, but the line came too soon. She backed up that run in a heritage handicap with a solid third at listed level in Ayr. Marine Wave got to the front at Ayr and tired late losing a couple of places. She finished runner-up to Makarova (now rated 106) at listed level last summer. Spycatcher would enjoy more rain and is drawn away from the pace horse Art Power. Marshman loves it at York and can bounce back following a below par run at Newmarket in the Abernant Stakes. On his first run this season he was run down late by Montassib at Doncaster in a listed race on soft ground. This quick course suits the smooth travelling Marshman who is nicely drawn in stall 14 near the pace horses.

Charlie Johnston's string have been running well this season and his LEagle Aid is a Free Eagle gelding who showed hints of ability in his three two-year-old runs back in December. They were all around a mile on the all-weather with the best of them coming on his debut, but the late start to his two-year-old career suggests he had been slow to come to hand, that means he makes his turf and handicap debut off what looks like a workable mark, and this step up in trip should be to his liking judged on his pedigree. A step-up from what he has shown so far would not surprise in a race where the Johnston runners have usually run well in recent times.

I think he can reverse placings with Tintintin around pan flat Haydock. Rare Middleton has lots of conditions in his favour in this race. The distance of one mile seven and a half furlongs places the emphasis on speed over stamina on this flat course. This horse caught my attention earlier in the season when winning easily at Doncaster over an extended two miles. He has bags of speed and Harry Cobden can ride him with confidence off a nice weight of 11-2.

The Victoria Cup is always one of the best sprint handicaps early in the turf season. It's tough with 25 runners and I like to have proven handicap form in the bag. Ramazan ran some fantastic races last season as an eight-year-old against his elders. He won the racing league leg at Chepstow last season off a rating of 98. That win came over 7 furlongs on good to soft ground. He backed up with a massive run in the Ayr Gold Cup, beaten a neck by Significantly. Ramazan showed he has the speed to lay up over six furlongs and the stamina to win over seven furlongs. He finished off last season with a nose defeat in a listed 7f race at Redcar. The handicapper has rated Ramazan 105, and I like that trainer Richard Fahey offers help by booking good 5lb claimer Joe Leavy. Ramazan warmed up with a nice run in a conditions race at Thirsk.
