Prince Achille from the Jedd O'Keeffe yard lines up in the Betfred Supporting Macmillan' Handicap (Class 5) over 1 mile 2 furlongs. A five-time winner, he has claimed four victories on the all-weather but only one from 18 on turf. He has placed eight times, including a strong second at Beverley on seasonal reappearance under today's jockey, Jack Garritty. His disappointing run at Pontefract next time out explains the generous odds today. There are two key considerations: 1- He may have bounced on his second start back, having run just a fortnight after his strong return. 2- The Pontefract run was messy, as he was trapped on the inside, lacked a clear run, and struggled up the final hill. Despite that, he remains in good form, and the flat, galloping track at Haydock should suit him better. He is fit and well, and with many rivals difficult to make a strong case for, he looks a solid contender.

Groundsman lines up in the Oakmere Homes Supporting Macmillan Grassroots Handicap (Class 5) over 1 mile, with £4,500 to the winner. Trained by Richard Fahey, one of the leading yards in the north, the stable has had a slow start to the season but has produced three winners in the last fortnight, suggesting momentum is building. Groundsman ran four times as a juvenile, showing promise in his first three starts before undergoing a gelding operation. He was well-backed at Chester, delivering an impressive third-place finish on 21st September. He was declared for Doncaster in April, but the ground was too quick, leading connections to wait for softer conditions. Now, with Danny Tudhope booked, and expected good ground at Haydock, he should be primed for a strong seasonal return. His handicap mark of 68 looks manageable, and with conditions finally in his favour, he appears well-placed for success.
