Odds slashed from 5/4 to 1/2 for March to be the coldest on record

With freezing conditions across the UK over the past week and amber warnings in place from the Met Office for the weekend's weather UK betting sites have slashed odds on March being the coldest on record.

The start of the week saw odds of 5/4 for the record to be broken in terms of coldest weather in March with the odds now coming down to just 1/2 that we see it get even colder this month.

The current coldest March temperature ever recorded was back on March 14 1958 in Logie Coldstone in Aberdeenshire where the weather hit a low of -22.8C.

Coral say that there's a 66% chance that the weather dips below that figure with -16C recorded in Altnaharra, Scotland earlier this week.

Betting on the weather has grown in popularity in recent years with global warming added to the intrigue around betting odds for the weather in the UK.

Bookies have slashed odds on this month being the coldest March ever recorded after treacherous conditions within the past week saw temperatures hit as low as -16C in Scotland.

3/1 also given for the River Thames to freeze over in March

Other specials offered by bookmakers around the weather this month includes 3/1 odds that the River Thames freezes over at some point in March.

We last saw the River Thames freeze over back in February 2021 win the Teddington Lock area of the river which partially froze over following sub-zero temperatures.

According to The Guardian this is due to water flowing more slowly at this point of the river making it 'more susceptible to icing over'.

There's a 25% chance that we see the river freezing again more than 2 years on from that according to the latest betting odds.

Odds also offered for April's weather with a 40% chance of snow to fall next month

With the cold weather expected to last throughout the month we may see April see a cold spell too with odds of 6/4 that we see snowfall next month.

April 2022 saw snow at the start of the month with April 1st having snowfall in the UK and we could well see the same again this year.

The implied probability of April snowfall according to the betting odds is 40% with a decent chance we see snow at some point throughout the month.

We may well see the cold weather head into April too with the latest betting odds suggesting there's a 40% chance that we see snowfall in the UK at some point next month!
