There has never been a Pope from the United States with only 17 Pope's of the 263 successors of St. Peter serving since the USA was founded in 1776.
In that period there have been 14 Italian, one Polish, one Argentinian and one German with no American Pope yet.
Cardinal Sean O'Malley was linked with the role the last time it was available pack in 2013 with reports that were leaked suggesting that he received votes.
The Washington Post reported back in 2019 that O'Malley received 10 votes and he may well be in the running again when the next Pope is chosen.
