Golf Tips - 'Player of The Week' 2021 (W/B 2nd August)

Postby PompeyJim » Mon Aug 02, 2021 10:50 am

Welcome to Week 31 of Player of the Week 2021, hope everyone are keeping safe and well.

Xander Schauffele (9/1) won the Men's Olympic Tournament last week for The rabbit (also yearly pick) and lola1183 !!

There are six tournaments this week featuring the Ladies Olympic Games Tournament and the WGC FedEx St Jude Invitational.

Image

If you have not played in previous weeks then please feel free to come and have a go, below are the competition rules and scoring.

Player of the Week 2021:

In addition to a weekly selection we are asking members to nominate a golfer to follow for the year, once you have submitted your golfer to follow for the year ahead you do not need to post he/she every time you enter a weekly pick.

We will confirm each week with the weekly selections if your golfer to follow for the year is active.

The golfer to follow for the year can be from any of the recognised tours and a selection will be required when members post their first weekly entry for 2021. This selection will earn points every time they win or finish runner up in a tournament, in addition to any potential points from the weekly selection.

*Your 'Golfer to Follow for the Year' selection can also be a weekly pick at any time you wish throughout the season, scoring will be the usual weekly points criteria plus 100 points if he/she wins the tournament or 50 points for finishing runner up.

The competition scoring is detailed below.

A key factor in the feedback from OLBG golf fans following ‘Player of the Week’ is the analysis which accompanies a member's selection so we require at least 50 WORDS explaining why you think your golfer is a good bet, this is just a few lines and extremely useful for readers looking to follow your selection.

CRITERIA

- For your first entry of 2021 we require your 'Golfer to Follow' for the year AND your selection for that week.
- After a 'Golfer to Follow' has been submitted it will then be ONE selection per week, with at least 50 words explaining your pick.
- The same golfer CAN be selected even if he/she has already been picked by another member.
- If your player withdraws BEFORE the tournament starts you can select a new pick as long as it is received before the cut off for entries.
- Deadline for entries each week will be the first tee off time of the tournament your player is competing.

WEEKLY SCORING

- Tournament Winner = 100 points
- 2nd = 50 points
- 3rd = 25 points
- 4th = 20 points
- 5th = 15 points
- 6th to 10th = 10 points

GOLFER to FOLLOW (YEAR)

- Tournament Winner = 100 points
- Tournament Runner Up = 50 points

* No other additional points (top 5, top 10, odds, leader, cut, etc) will be awarded for this pick.

- 10/1 to 19/1 = (WIN) 5 points, (Top 5) 0 points

- First Round Leader = 7 points
- Made The Cut = 5 points

All points will be doubled (including for Golfer of the Year picks) for the 4 majors (US Masters, The US Open, The Open Championship and the USPGA Championship)

There will be a separate Ryder Cup Competition which is scheduled for 24th to 26th September 2021.

PLAYER: Lydia Ko

TOURNAMENT: WOMENS OLYMPIC GAMES

REASON FOR SUPPORT:

Lydia Ko 16/1 has performed well so far this season and has obtained a total of seven top 10 finishes on the LPGA tour this year and won the Lotte Championship in April. She was jt 6th in the Evian Championship a fortnight ago so she has recent good form. This week's course was used for the Men's golf event at the Olympics with the winning score being -18 so it is not a particularly difficult course and Lydia is one of the best putters playing here ( presently ranked 3rd in the putting average and putts per GIR stats on the LPGA tour ) so she could make a decent number of birdies. She won the Silver medal in the last Olympics when it was held in Brazil and is a proud New Zealander who will be trying her best here to win Gold.

PLAYER: Ariya Jutanugarn 18/1

TOURNAMENT: Olympics

REASON FOR SUPPORT:

Ariya has been in solid form this season, winning the last event she played (Dow team event with her sister) as well as winning earlier this year in her home country of Thailand. She has a way of coming through in situations that are personally important to her (both her wins this year were such events). She's done so much to grow the game in Thailand, winning an Olympic medal is definitely very important to her.

Good luck all!

Player - Daniel Berger (25/1)

Tournament - WGC St Jude Invitational

Reasons for Support -

8th in The Open Championship at Royal St. George’s, the American has won twice around TPC Southwind and I fancy he heads to Memphis feeling good about his game. 9th in The Players, 7th in the U.S. Open, Berger was tied 2nd twelve months ago in the WGC St.Jude Invitational and I fancy the world number 17 challenges for his second win of the season after claiming the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am earlier in the year. bet365 and William Hill are best price offering 25/1 this week.

Player - Brooks Koepka 12/1

Tournament - WGC St Jude Invitational

Reasons for Support -

4th in the U.S. Open, 5th in the Travelers Championship and 6th at The Open Championship, Koepka is close to another win and TPC Southwind is a course that suits the multiple major champion. Tied 2nd last year in this World Golf Championship and the winner in 2019, I am backing the world number 8 to be the man to beat this week in Memphis as his power game matches up nicely to a track he can overpower.

Player : Mito Pereira 20-1 bet365

Event : Barracuda Championship

Reason for support : I like the the look of Mito this week he has already won two weeks in a row on the Korn ferry Tour and lately now on the PGA Tour he has been 5th and 6th last week he finished 3rd in The Olympics but did not go through in the play-off for the bronze medal. He is a very attacking player and this stapleford format should suit him perfectly he should be near the top of the leaderboard. gl all

Player - Callum Shinkwin 60/1

Tournament - Hero Open

Reasons for Support -

Second and tied eighth in recent Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open events and that goes with a tied 10th a few years back at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St.Andrews, I am tipping Callum Shinkwin who was fourth at the Cazoo Open last month to play well back up in Scotland. He had a 63 on Saturday and a 67 on Sunday in Wales and my tip is the English golfer challenges for this Hero Open as he does do well in Scotland and is in form right now.

Player - Taylor Moore @15 (bet365)

Tournament - Utah Championship (Korn Ferry Tour)

Reasons for Support - Taylor Moore has certainly been the best player on this Tour in the last events, considering that he comes from 4 top-10 finishes in a row, including a win and a 2nd place in the last 2 tournaments. He has the best ranking among the players who will take part in this event by far, and just 2 opponents are included in the top-200 of the OWGR, so a few players seem to be dangerous for such a consistent player. Moore has missed the cut the last time he has played here, but this time he should be much more competitive and maybe fight for the title.

Sorry, but Taylor Moore will not play in the KFT even if he was included in the field until this morning. I know it is later than 2pm, I will choose a player who will start playing later, so I hope my selection is good:

Player - Seth Reeves

Tournament - Utah Championship (Korn Ferry Tour)

Reasons for Support - Seth Reeves has been absolutely consistent on this Tour in 2021, considering that he has collected 2 3rd places and finished in the top-20 in 5 out of the last 6 events. This consistency has allowed him to gain more than 100 places in the OWGR since the beginning of 2021 and he has now reached the best place ever in the OWGR: he has missed the cut in this event in 2020, but the shape he has shown in 2021 should allow him to be much more competitive this time, so he could be a good choice for this week.
